Dictation for Slack and email

Slack, Messages and Discord use Roundhand's Chat style. A short message comes out the way you would type one: a capital letter, no full stop at the end, and a question mark if you asked something. Longer messages get normal punctuation. The filler words you say while thinking are removed, and when you start a sentence again, Roundhand keeps the version you meant. Hold the key, say "can we push the review to Thursday", let go, and the message is sitting in the box, waiting for you to send it.

Mail uses the Prose style: full sentences, full punctuation and proper capitals. With cloud cleanup on, a long email can also be split into paragraphs; the offline cleanup does not add paragraph breaks. Webmail in a browser uses Prose by default too, and so do Notes, Pages and Google Docs. If your email client is one Roundhand does not know, it still gets Prose, since that is the style for every app without a built-in one.

Every Roundhand plan includes the offline cleanup, which runs on your Mac: it takes out filler words, sorts out restarts, and fixes casing and punctuation, without adding words you did not say. Cloud cleanup goes further with punctuation and wording, and it sends the text of your dictation, never the audio, to a cleanup provider. It comes with the 15-day trial, with Pro, and with Power when you use your own API key. If the cloud is unreachable or Pro's monthly allowance runs out, Roundhand falls back to the offline cleanup so your message still lands.

By default you hold the dictation key while you talk and let go when you are done. For a longer email, switch to tap to start and tap to stop in Settings, so your hands are free while you think. Either way the text appears at your cursor; Roundhand does not send the message, unless you turn on Press Return after dictation.

Does Roundhand work in the Slack desktop app?

Yes, Roundhand writes into the Slack app on the Mac and uses its Chat style there, so short messages stay casual. It works in Slack in a browser too, with the Prose style unless you choose another for that site in Settings.

Will it send my Slack message for me?

No, not unless you ask it to. Roundhand places the text at your cursor, and there is an optional Press Return after dictation setting that sends it straight away.

Can I dictate a long email with paragraphs?

Yes, in Mail and other Prose apps Roundhand writes full sentences with full punctuation, and cloud cleanup can split a long email into paragraphs; the offline cleanup does not. With tap to start and tap to stop you can talk for a while without holding a key.

Is my email text sent anywhere?

Your audio is never uploaded or saved to disk. The text is sent to a cleanup provider only when cloud cleanup is on; the offline cleanup tidies it on your Mac.
